The maximum print dimension is simply your pixel count divided by the target DPI, which means the DPI you choose directly trades off against size: 300 DPI (photo quality) limits you to a smaller maximum print size from a given image, while a lower target like 150 DPI — reasonable for a large poster viewed from a few feet away rather than examined up close — lets the same image stretch to a considerably larger size before it starts looking soft. Checking this before ordering a large print avoids paying for a poster size the source image genuinely can't support at good quality.
