Enter the final trimmed size of your printed piece and the bleed amount your printer requires. This calculates the total document size you need to design at, so your background/images extend past the trim line with no white edges after cutting.

Bleed exists because cutting is never perfectly precise — commercial printing presses and guillotine cutters can drift by a fraction of a millimeter, and without bleed that tiny drift shows up as a thin, unintended white sliver along the trimmed edge. 0.125 inch (about 3mm) is the most common bleed requirement across commercial printers, though larger-format prints sometimes call for 0.25 inch instead — always check your specific printer's requirement before finalizing a document, since bleed amount is one of the few print-prep details that varies meaningfully between print shops.
