This calculator finds the tangent of your angle, e.g. tan(45°) = 1, and plots the tangent curve with your angle marked.

Tangent is defined as sine divided by cosine, and unlike its two relatives, it isn't bounded between −1 and 1 — it can take on any real value, and shoots toward infinity as the angle approaches 90° or 270°, where cosine hits zero. Enter an angle in degrees or radians, and this calculator finds its tangent value instantly, along with where that angle falls on the tangent curve. Because dividing by zero has no defined result, tangent itself is undefined at those specific angles.

  • Tangent is defined as sine divided by cosine, tan(θ) = sin(θ) / cos(θ), or equivalently the opposite side divided by the adjacent side in a right triangle.
  • Unlike sine and cosine, tangent is unbounded — it can take any real value, and shoots toward infinity as the angle approaches 90° or 270°, where cosine is zero.
  • Tangent is undefined at 90° and 270° (and every angle 180° apart from those), since dividing by a cosine of zero has no defined result.

How do I calculate the tangent of an angle?

Divide the sine of the angle by its cosine, or apply the tangent function directly, built into every scientific calculator and programming language.

What is tan(45°)?

1 — since sin(45°) and cos(45°) are equal, their ratio is exactly 1.
