This calculator finds the angle whose sine equals your value, e.g. arcsin(0.5) = 30°.

Arcsin answers a different question than sine does — instead of asking what the sine of an angle is, it asks what angle has a given sine value in the first place, which is why it's also written sin⁻¹. Enter any value between −1 and 1, and this calculator finds the corresponding angle in both degrees and radians. Since infinitely many angles technically share the same sine, arcsin always returns the single principal value between −90° and 90°.

  • Arcsin (written sin⁻¹ or asin) is the inverse of the sine function, answering the question "what angle has this sine value?" rather than "what is the sine of this angle?"
  • Arcsin only accepts inputs between −1 and 1, since sine itself never produces a value outside that range — anything outside it has no real solution.
  • Arcsin returns a single angle between −90° and 90°, called the principal value, even though infinitely many angles technically share the same sine.

What does arcsin actually calculate?

It finds the angle (within −90° to 90°) whose sine equals the value you provide — the reverse operation of the sine function.

What is arcsin(0.5)?

30°, since sin(30°) = 0.5.
