This calculator finds the difference between two temperatures and shows that difference in Celsius, Fahrenheit, and Kelvin.

Enter two temperature readings and their shared unit to see the size of the change between them — expressed in all three major scales, since a temperature difference converts differently than an absolute reading.

This is a genuinely easy trap to fall into: converting an absolute temperature reading requires an offset (like subtracting 32 for Fahrenheit-to-Celsius), but converting a difference between two readings does not, since the offset cancels out on both sides of the subtraction — a 1°C difference is always exactly equal to a 1.8°F difference, never anything involving 32. Celsius and Kelvin differences, by contrast, match each other exactly one-to-one, since both scales use an identically sized degree and differ only in where their zero point sits.

Why is the Fahrenheit difference bigger than the Celsius difference?

Each Fahrenheit degree is smaller (5/9 the size of a Celsius degree), so the same real change in temperature corresponds to a larger number of Fahrenheit degrees.

Does the order of the two temperatures matter?

No — enter them in either order; a negative result simply means the second temperature is lower than the first.
