A perfect square is any number that equals a whole number multiplied by itself — 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, and so on — while a perfect cube equals a whole number multiplied by itself twice more, like 1, 8, 27, and 64; unlike perfect squares, negative numbers can be perfect cubes too, since −27 equals (−3)³. A small handful of numbers, like 1 and 64, are both a perfect square and a perfect cube simultaneously — 64 is 8² and also 4³ — which is a fun fact this checker will surface directly rather than you having to spot it by hand.

  • Perfect square: a number that equals some whole number multiplied by itself (1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49...).
  • Perfect cube: a number that equals some whole number multiplied by itself twice more (1, 8, 27, 64, 125...) — negative numbers can be perfect cubes too, e.g. −27 = (−3)³.

Can a negative number be a perfect square?

No — squaring any real number (positive or negative) always produces a non-negative result, so negative numbers can never be perfect squares.

Can a negative number be a perfect cube?

Yes — cubing a negative number keeps the result negative (e.g. (−3)³ = −27), so negative perfect cubes do exist, unlike perfect squares.
