This calculator works backward from a percentage, e.g. if 45 is 15% of a number, that number is 300.

Enter a known value and the percentage it represents to find the original base number it came from — useful when you know a discounted price and the discount percentage, but need the original price.

The calculation divides the known value by the percentage expressed as a decimal — if 45 is known to be 15% of some number, that number works out to 45 divided by 0.15, or 300. This "working backward" calculation shows up constantly in everyday finance: knowing a final price and a discount rate but needing the pre-discount price, knowing a tax amount and the tax rate but needing the pre-tax price, or knowing a commission payout and the commission rate but needing the total sale value it was calculated from.

  • Formula: Base Number = Value ÷ (Percent ÷ 100).
  • Example: if 45 is 15% of a number, the number = 45 ÷ 0.15 = 300.
  • Common use: you know a tax amount and the tax rate, and want to find the pre-tax price — or you know a commission amount and rate, and want the total sale value.

How is this different from the basic Percentage Calculator?

The Percentage Calculator finds a percentage OF a known number; this one works backward — you know the result and the percentage, and want to find the original number.

What if the percentage is zero?

Division by zero is undefined, so this calculator returns 0 in that edge case rather than an error.
