This calculator divides your waist circumference by your hip circumference to give your Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR) — a simple indicator the World Health Organization uses alongside BMI to assess fat distribution risk.

Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR) compares the circumference of your waist to your hips. Unlike BMI, which only considers total body mass, WHR reflects where fat is distributed — abdominal ("apple-shaped") fat carries more cardiovascular risk than fat stored around the hips ("pear-shaped"), even at the same body weight.

The WHO classifies risk using WHR thresholds: for men, a ratio above 0.90 indicates increased risk; for women, above 0.85. It takes only two tape-measure readings, making it one of the fastest health screening tools available.

  • Two Measurements Only: Just waist and hip circumference — no scale, height, or age needed.
  • WHO Risk Thresholds: Above 0.90 (men) or 0.85 (women) is associated with increased cardiovascular risk.
  • Complements BMI: Two people with the same BMI can have very different health risk depending on fat distribution — WHR captures that difference.

How do I measure my hips correctly?

Measure around the widest part of your hips/buttocks, keeping the tape horizontal and snug but not compressing the skin.

What WHR is considered healthy?

The WHO considers below 0.90 for men and below 0.85 for women to be in the lower-risk range, though this should be considered alongside other health markers.
