This calculator finds friction force (f = μN), or, if you know the friction force, it solves for the coefficient of friction or normal force instead - e.g. a coefficient of 0.3 with a normal force of 500 N gives a friction force of 150 N.

Friction force resists motion between two surfaces in contact, proportional to how hard the surfaces press together (the normal force) and how rough they are (the coefficient of friction).   • The core formula is f = μ × N, so a coefficient of friction of 0.3 with a normal force of 500 N gives a friction force of 150 N.
  • Higher coefficients mean rougher surfaces - rubber on dry concrete might be around 0.6-0.8, while ice on ice can be as low as 0.03.
  • This calculator uses one coefficient generically - in practice, static friction (before motion starts) and kinetic friction (during motion) usually have slightly different coefficients, with static typically being higher.
