Each measure tells a different part of the story: the mean is the standard "average" and is sensitive to extreme outliers, the median is the middle value and stays stable even when a few values are unusually large or small, the mode is whichever value (or values) occur most often, and the range is simply the gap between the smallest and largest value. Looking at all four together — rather than relying on just the mean — gives a much more honest picture of a dataset, especially one that might be skewed by a handful of extreme values.

  • Mean: the sum of all values divided by how many there are — the standard "average" most people mean by that word.
  • Median: the middle value when the data is sorted (or the average of the two middle values for an even count) — less affected by extreme outliers than the mean.
  • Mode: the most frequently occurring value(s) — a dataset can have one mode, multiple modes (tied), or no mode at all if every value is unique.
  • Range: the difference between the largest and smallest value — the simplest measure of how spread out the data is.

When should I use median instead of mean?

When your data has extreme outliers (like income data with a few very high earners) — the median better represents a "typical" value since it isn't pulled by extremes the way the mean is.

What does it mean if there's no mode?

It means every value in your dataset appears exactly once — with no repeated value, there's no single "most common" value to report.
