This calculator finds total hours worked in a single shift, after subtracting an unpaid break, e.g. 9 AM-5 PM minus 30 min break = 7h 30m.

Enter your shift start time, end time, and unpaid break length to find exactly how many hours you worked — useful for timesheets or checking your paycheck.

The calculation is the raw shift duration (end time minus start time) with the break minutes subtracted — for example, a 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM shift (8 hours) minus a 30-minute unpaid break comes to 7.5 hours worked. Overnight shifts are handled automatically: if the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator assumes the shift wraps past midnight rather than producing a negative result, which makes it useful for night-shift and hospitality workers as well as standard daytime schedules.

  • Method: raw shift duration (end minus start) minus the break minutes entered.
  • Overnight shifts: if the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator assumes the shift wraps past midnight.
  • Example: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM (8 hours) minus a 30-minute break = 7 hours 30 minutes.

What if I had two separate breaks?

Add them together and enter the total break minutes (e.g. 15 + 15 = 30).

Does this handle overnight shifts?

Yes — enter a start time like 10:00 PM and end time like 6:00 AM, and the calculator automatically wraps to the next day.
