The 10% waste allowance accounts for pavers that need to be cut to fit along edges, curves, or around obstacles like a post or drain — without it, ordering exactly enough pavers for the raw area alone almost always leaves a project short by the time the last row is laid. This is a standard rule of thumb in paving and tiling projects generally, and it's usually cheaper and far less stressful to order the extra 10% upfront than to place a second, smaller order later at a higher per-unit price or discover the original batch is no longer in stock.
- Imperial: Area per Paver = (Length × Width in inches) ÷ 144; Pavers Needed = (Area × 1.10) ÷ Area per Paver. Example: 200 sq ft with 12×6 in pavers = 440 pavers.
- Metric: Area per Paver = (Length × Width in cm) ÷ 10000; Pavers Needed = (Area × 1.10) ÷ Area per Paver. Example: 18 m² with 30×15 cm pavers = 440 pavers.
- Why add 10%? cutting pavers around edges and curves always creates some waste, in either unit system.
Why include a waste allowance?
Real-world layouts rarely use every paver whole — cuts around borders, corners, and obstacles waste material, so a 10% buffer is standard practice.
Does this account for the gaps between pavers (joints)?
No — this estimate assumes pavers are laid edge-to-edge; if you use wide sand joints, you may need slightly fewer pavers than calculated.
